Australia Day at Arcadia 2009

An estimated 60 people gathered at the Arcadia Community Centre to enjoy a traditional “Aussie Brecky” cooked on the barby, people from the neighboring areas of Karramomus, Kialla, Shepparton and visitors from Melbourne joined with locals to celebrate the event.

The guest speaker was Councilor Cherie Crawford from The City of Greater Shepparton Council, she also presented the Citizen of The Year Awards. In her address Cr.Crawford gave an insight in to the reasons for nominating for council and her expectations for open and transparent council decisions; she concluded by presenting her thoughts on what Australia Day means to her in our society of diverse cultures.

The Citizen of The Year Award was presented jointly to Jackie and Collier McCracken particularly for their work within the Arcadia community, this husband and wife team have been very active in the Arcadia and District Landcare Group, organizing many functions, and have been passionate in tree planting through out the district.

Collier was elected as the first secretary when the Group was formed in 1994 and has remained as an office bearer ever since; at present they are the president and secretary of the group.

The Young Citizen of The Year Award was presented to Fergus Wright, Fergus attended Kialla West Primary School where he was a member of junior council, he is polite and well mannered with a strong work ethic. He was a member of the inaugural Kialla West School Football Club, Soccer Club and Toolamba Cricket Club U13s.
