There was a gathering of at least 70 people who came to the Community Centre to celebrate Australia Day. Everyone enjoyed the Aussie breakfast of snags, bacon, eggs and tomatoes. Kevin Murray raised the flag, he is a past player of the Fitzroy Football Club and Brownlow Medallist and has been a resident of Arcadia for a number of years; this was followed by the singing of the National Anthem. The guest speaker was Australia Ambassador Neil Roberts who has a long history with the St Kilda Football Club as a past player, Captain and Brownlow Medallist in 1958; he was also Officer in Charge at Mawson, Antarcticia in 1971-73. His address was informative and brought with it a message for an even better Australia in the future, telling stories along the way of amusing situations from his involvement in football and the media. Presentations were made to the Arcadia Australia Day Citizen of the Year, John Kennedy and also to the Arcadia Australia Day Junior Citizen of the Year, Emma Goode. |
